9th October 2026 – GBR at a glance:
- Individual Women’s Epee A: Bronze
- Individual Men’s Sabre B: Gold
Medal tally: 4 bronze, 2 gold

Dimitri Coutya secured another European title on the fourth day of Cardiff 2026, winning gold in the men’s sabre B. This followed his men’s epee B title on day two of the event.
After winning four of his five poule fights, Dimitri Coutya went into the direct elimination round seeded tenth. His first direct elimination fight was against Poland’s Adam Jablonski, and after defeating him 15-10, Coutya went on to the quarterfinals. There, he met Amelio Castro (ITA), whom he had also fought for the title of European Champion in the epee final the previous day. A decisive 15-8 victory put Coutya into the semi-finals.

His next opponent was disqualified, paving the way for Coutya’s final against reigning European Champion Adrian Castro (POL). Coutya took a strong 8-2 lead, but Castro threatened to make a return to the match. With the score at 14-11, Dimitri held his ground and closed out the fight 15-11, securing gold and his first-ever European sabre title.
Speaking afterwards, Dimitri spoke about what it takes to get to the top of the podium and said:
“I’m really happy. I think we’ve had some good work put into it over the last couple of years. I feel like it’s coming together. There are still things that I’m not very good at and I think I could get a lot better at, so for it to have come together at this stage and to have resulted in a gold medal at such a strong stage, I’m very happy with that, but there’s a lot more work to do.”
Coutya expressed his thanks to coaches Ben Peggs, Nat Lewis, and Chris Hay, as well as teammates Piers Gilliver and Shah Rashid, who have helped in sabre.
BF Head of Paralympic Performance, Chris Price, commented:
“I believe this is his first-ever European gold in sabre, which considering it’s effectively his third weapon, is an absolutely incredible achievement. Given he’s had a really challenging summer health-wise, I’m absolutely delighted for him today and all the performances he’s put in across the week. Couldn’t be prouder of him, all the effort he’s put in and all the effort the coaches have put in alongside. It’s fantastic.”
On the same day, fellow GBR athlete Gemma Collis secured a bronze medal in the Women’s Epee A, bringing GBR’s medal tally to four bronze and two gold medals at the European Championships.
