This is a demo, not British Fencing’s website. The clubs, coaches, events and results are BF’s own; the live rankings are calculated here from them, under BF’s Ranking Scheme. Member accounts are made up, and payments are in test mode.

Become a Welfare Officer

All BF affiliated clubs & events must have a Welfare Officer in place.

If you are a club seeking to understand what the club needs to do, please see our Club Guidance page

Below are the steps that a club or event Welfare Officer must have in place to be fully compliant.

Hold a Valid British Fencing Membership

The membership type can be Supporter or a level above that and renewed on a yearly basis. If it is not renewed, then you will show as non-compliant on the Welfare Officer register.

A valid membership ensures that you are covered by the BF Public Liability Insurance (subject to appropriate checks and qualifications being in place) and are bound by BF policies and Codes of Conduct.

Have a Valid Up-To-Date- Criminal Record Check

Each Home Country has a different process for criminal record checks.

If you are in England and Wales, once you have received your DBS certificate you can sign up for the online Update Service. This is free for volunteers and will automatically roll over every year.

Attend the Required Training Courses

In order to show you have an understanding of safeguarding and protecting children and adults at risk in the sporting context you need to have attended the required training.

BF will grant a 6 month “in training” period for identified volunteers who already have a criminal record check and a SafeGuard Core training certificate (or Home Nation equivalent).

All the certificates must be uploaded to the BF Membership platform (Sport:80).

BF courses can be found on and booked directly via Sport:80. Additional courses will be run on-demand, so please contact us if you can’t find a suitable course in your area.

Create a Club Welfare Officer Profile

If you have not yet created a Welfare Officer profile, you can follow the steps below or watch the guidance video.

  • Sign in to your account via the Sport:80 login page.
  • Select View Profile.
  • Choose Coach & Official Profiles.
  • Select Add a Profile.
  • Choose Club Welfare Officer Profile.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • At the locator settings page, select Yes if you would like to be discoverable through the public directory.
  • Choose whether your contact details will be visible.
  • Add any additional information you would like displayed.
  • Select Add to submit your profile.

For a step-by-step demonstration, watch the Welfare Officer profile setup video.

Once submitted, BF will review your profile and either approve it or contact you if any further information is required.

If you need support, the Workforce team can assist with profile creation. If you would like BF to add text to the additional information section on your behalf, please provide the wording exactly as you would like it to appear.

Review Your Clubs Existing Welfare Policies (not needed for EWO)

If these exist, they should be provided by the club as part of your induction. BF Welfare policies and guidelines may be of help to create your own bespoke club versions.

If you have any queries then please contact BF

The club can also find information on the Club Guidance page

Be Assigned to the Clubs Sport:80 Information as a Welfare Officer (not needed for EWO)

The person who has permission on the Sport80 platform to assign roles is usually the Club Secretary.

Ask them to appoint you as the Welfare Contact for your club.

The club can also find information on the Club Guidance page.

If you need help in this process, please contact BF.
