Great Britain’s Jonathan “JJ” Webb took bronze at the Nuremberg Satellite Sabre competition this weekend, with a disciplined performance in a strong field of over 100 fencers.

After securing five wins from his six poule matches, JJ had a bye into the last 64, where he defeated Italy’s Zanotto 15-7, before coolly closing out a tense last 32 match 15-13 against Kral (CZE). In the L16. JJ put in perhaps his best performance of the day against Germany’s Phillip Methner, winning 15-10 in a contest which he controlled throughout. In the last 8 JJ closed out another tense match, this time against Biro (HUN), scoring two well set up one-light attacks from 14-13 down. In the semi-final, the British sabreur lost out to Turkish Olympian and world no. 20 Enver Yildirim 15-8 in an entertaining tactical battle, and finished in 3rd place overall.

JJ was pleased with his mindset throughout the day, commenting:

“I am really happy with my mental and tactical performance at this event. We have worked a lot in pre-season on being more consistent and clinical under pressure, and that paid off today with a couple of wins from difficult situations. I’d like to thank the coaching team for supporting me every step of the way, and I’m really looking forward to performing in Algiers at the first Senior World Cup of the season.”
