The competition saw the team compete together in this specific grouping for the first time, an important milestone ahead of upcoming events as noted by David Sosnov, “This is our first time competing as a team, so to show that we can produce such a great result before the Europeans and Worlds is very encouraging.”

Team mate Callum Penman agreed, “It’s our first time as a team together with this specific group of people. We really gelled and came out with a great result.”

Newcomer to the Junior Mens Foil Team, Mohammed Belbouab said, “It was a good learning experience and it was my first time at Junior Teams…I just hope to produce similar results.”

David Kelly spoke about the journey to the podium, “We rode the highs and lows all day and came out on top.”

Speaking of the journey, the team met Mexico 34/45 in the tableau of 16, taking them on to a hard fought 43/44 against the USA team before facing China 41/45, that brought them to silver against the eventual winners Hong Kong, 37/45.

Callum Penman summed up the determination they had drawn on throughout the day, “Even though the draw is tough, it’s still possible. You have to believe in yourself as a team.”

Head of Olympic, Dusty Miller said of the result, “This result is a significant marker in the development of this group. To achieve a silver medal in their first competition together, against such a strong international field, speaks to both their technical quality and coaching support. With their collective mindset, performances like this give us real confidence as we look ahead to the European and World Championships; they also underline the strength of the GBR Pathway.”
