BF BECOMES FIRST SPORTS ORGANISATION ACCREDITED AS SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL LEAVE EMPLOYER

BF has been accredited as a Sustainable Travel Leave Employer with climate charity Possible, becoming the first organisation in the sport sector to receive this accreditation.

BF has introduced a Sustainable Travel Leave policy and is now an accredited Sustainable Travel Leave employer with climate charity Possible (formerly 10:10). BF is the first organisation in the sport sector to receive this accreditation.

This means that BF employees and volunteers are now able to access a range of benefits negotiated by Possible for accredited organisations. These will be available to all staff and members who volunteer directly for BF, such as event volunteers, committee members, and contracted coaches. To access these, you will need to request access to the page by completing a form. Click here to access and complete the form.

Sustainable Travel Leave is an innovative initiative pioneered by climate charity Possible. Possible supported BF to implement the policy, and by adopting Sustainable Travel Leave, we have also unlocked access to additional benefits.

Why have we adopted Sustainable Travel Leave?

Sport has a big impact on the world and is a platform to inspire positive change. BF takes the climate crisis seriously and flying can be one of the most polluting thing individuals do in their lifetimes. So, avoiding flights is one of the most powerful actions we can take to protect the planet.

BF recognises that travelling to international events does involve flying in most cases, and this is very hard to avoid. This has a significant contribution to our overall carbon emissions. For those of you who do want to offset some of this, we have identified two schemes which we would direct people to look at:

BF has also committed to a staff education programme. All staff will undertake a course developed by the United Nations as part of their Climate Change education platform. The course, named ‘Introduction to Sports for Climate Action’, is available to everyone. Click here to learn more.

Clare Halsted, Chair of BF’s Environmental Sustainability Group, said:

“I am delighted to see my beloved sport taking this generous step towards reducing carbon emissions. We fencers can’t change the world but we can play our small part and hopefully influence others.”
