COMIC RELIEF VISITS MUSLIM GIRLS FENCE IN DONCASTER
The Doncaster Muslim Girls Fence (MGF) group hosted Comic Relief for some fundraising fun, and shared how fencing can change people’s lives.
The Muslim Girls Fence (MGF) group was visited by Comic Relief in Doncaster on the 23rd July, demonstrating the power of fencing to change people’s lives. Healthy Her South Yorkshire CIC, a community-led organisation that aims to empower women, identified local volunteers who had attended BF’s Core Coach course to participate in the event. These volunteers, with support from Maslaha, are now delivering fencing sessions in the local community.
Paul Cummins, BF Participation Director, said:
“It was fantastic to see Akeela from Healthy Her South Yorkshire CIC and Allia from Maslaha in Doncaster last week. It was clear to see that fencing is being used as a tool for a wide array of community outcomes, including mental health and social isolation. From Doncaster Minster to the Sandalwood Communal Hall, fencing is adaptable and flexible for the needs of the community.”
Muslim Girls Fence is a project collaboration between Maslaha and BF, which aims to facilitate spaces at a grassroots level for Muslim girls and women to challenge assumptions and narratives relating to their gender, racial, religious, and other identities through both physical and creative methods. British Fencing provides training opportunities to up-skill women from the local community to deliver safe, fun, and engaging sessions, as well as working with existing fencing coaches who can support the delivery and open up opportunities for women to get involved. Muslim Girls Fence programmes take place in Birmingham, Bradford, London, Manchester, Bolton, Peterborough and Doncaster.
