On the first day of the EFC Cadet Epee competition in Naples, the GBR 1 team brought home a bronze medal. The team, featuring Jack Beckley, Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson, Solu Ngoka and Alex Nicholas, were seeded 1st and earned a bye into the tableau of 8.

Their first fight of the day was against Italy 5, opened by Jack Beckley. Both teams began toe-to-toe but GBR 1 soon drew away from the Italian team. Bolstered by an impressive nine-point leg by Alex Nicholas, the score turned into 25-13 to GBR. This lead continued for the rest of the match, with GBR 1 winning 45-27.

GBR 1 then faced Italy 1 in the semi-final. The two teams stayed close for the duration of the match, with Italy maintaining their lead. Although the final score was a 45-37 defeat for GBR, they showed great teamwork.

GBR 1’s final match of the day was once again against Italy, this time their second team. GBR started off with a 0-3 lead, but was soon overtaken after an eight-point leg from Italy’s Pietro de Gaetano, bringing the score to 8-6. The two teams stayed close throughout the match, before Solu Ngoka brought the score to 25-23 in GBR’s favour. The team closed out the match with strong and confident fencing. A final score of 43-37 secured the bronze medal for GBR 1.

Following the win, Solu said via Instagram:

“Thank you to my teammates, the whole GB squad and Sam for coaching over the whole weekend.”
