Paralympians Dimitri Coutya, Justine Moore, Piers Gilliver, and Welsh favourite Gemma Collis represented GBR in the Mixed Team Epee, earning a place on the podium with bronze. After being closely defeated 20-19 by Poland, they brought the competition back against 1st seed Italy, winning 20-17.

Afterwards, Moore spoke about the team’s achievement:

“For the team, it’s about having the experience. Hopefully the next one we go to we can get a bit better and improve our performances. It’s the first time we’ve competed as a team together, so it’s a new thing.

“We just have to work together and improve for the next time. It’s still been an amazing week overall.”

The mixed team event format involves two female and two male fencers and will feature at the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

The competition features a shorter 20-point format, compared with the traditional 45-point team events, designed to create a more dynamic and engaging experience for athletes and spectators.

With athletes from France, Ukraine, Italy, Hungary, Poland, and Great Britain competing in Cardiff, the opening day delivered a strong start for the GBR squad on home soil.

The double bronze success provides early momentum for the British team as the championships continue in the Welsh capital.
