BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2025: LUCAS ESIMAJE-HEATH

BF celebrates Black History Month with epee fencer Lucas Esimaje-Heath. We find out how he got involved in fencing, his message to the fencing community, and how others should get involved in the sport.
October is Black History Month in the UK, an annual month that celebrates and reflects on Black history, arts and culture, as well as recognising the achievements and roles of Black people in shaping history.
To celebrate Black History Month, throughout October we are asking some of the members of our community to tell us more about themselves and their lives in fencing.
Introduce yourself.
Hi, I’m Lucas Heath and I’m on the Pentathlon GB and British Fencing Pathways.
How did you get into fencing?
I got into fencing because my mum did it and I always watched her fence, and I found it really cool.
Why do you enjoy fencing?
I love fencing because I like to learn new techniques and implement them into my competitions. Even though it’s a solo sport, you get to be part of a team.
What’s your message to the fencing community?
My message to the fencing community is to keep training hard and have fun.
How and why should other people get involved?
I think you should start fencing because it’s a good way to make new friends and also to try something different.
