2025 BF HONOURS: MALCOM CAWTON

As nominations for the 2026 BF Honours open, we’re shining a spotlight on this year’s recipients. In this feature, we speak to Malcolm Cawton, who received a Bronze Medal for voluntary coaching, mentoring and supporting Chilwell Blades Fencing Club, since founding it over 50 years ago.

Tell us about the work you do to support fencing…

In 1974 I ran a coaching session for anyone wanting to try foil fencing in my local sports centre. Following that, Chilwell Blades Fencing Club was born and I was coaching and running a weekly class of aspiring fencers of all ages and both sexes. Today, 51 years later I am president of the club, which has never stopped and has grown to be a friendly three-weapon club where fencing is fun and not too expensive. Throughout those 51 years, I have been coach and at various times treasurer, secretary and chairman. I still serve on the committee and run some of our events. I also coach and am responsible for keeping our kit in order.

What is your favourite memory of your time volunteering in fencing?

I have so many great memories from the last 51 years, but seeing the club continue to flourish on its 50th anniversary must rate highly. It’s also very rewarding when the encouragement given to a fencer unaware of their potential results in them being selected for GB for their fourth successive Veteran World Championships.

What does it mean to receive the 2025 BF Honours award?

Receiving this Bronze award is wonderful as it shows that my time involved with the club has not been wasted, but has been valued by the club. I do however feel a little guilty about being rewarded for something I have always loved doing.

What would you say to people considering volunteering in fencing or sport in general?

I would encourage everyone who is able to take up or get involved in sport for its benefits to their health and well-being. The rewards are tremendous and often surprising, as demonstrated by the Bronze medal which I have received.

ABOUT THE BF HONOURS

BF Honours are awarded to members who have demonstrably upheld the BF values of honesty, respect and excellence, all while making a significant contribution to fencing in the UK. Awards are conferred annually and announced and presented at the AGM by the BF President.

Fencers who have represented GBR either as an individual or as a team member and have achieved a podium place in specific categories will automatically be recommended for an appropriate award.
