Key Dates: Environmental Sustainability
Some key environmental sustainability dates for your diary, with ways fencers, clubs and supporters can get involved.
20th September 2026, World Clean Up Day
This annual social action day is dedicated to cleaning up and combatting solid waste across the world.
Clubs and members are encouraged to get involved in the initiative. Could you clean up the area surrounding your training centre?
Are you a competition organisers who can encourage competitors to limit waste?

14th October 2026, international E-Waste Day
This global initiative is dedicated to raising awareness surrounding electronic waste, with a focus this year on ‘Fast tech.’
E-waste in fencing is easily avoidable, clubs can mitigate against E-waste by conducting regular audits of kit in order to repair, recycle and donate any old electronic kit such as scoring boxes, spools, lames and blades.
Other possibilities include recycling old wires and batteries rather than throwing them in with regular waste.

26th January 2027, International Day of Clean Energy
This United Nations initiative is about protecting the planet and promoting clean energy.
Competition organisers can get involved with clean energy by checking if potential venues generate clean electricity. Do they use a generator, solar panels or other sustainable methods? If not, do they mitigate against this with any clean energy schemes?
Clubs and members can also consider clean energy and sustainability when picking venues by asking venues whether they generate or use clean energy. Simply asking and making this part of the conversation can help raise awareness and demand.

21st March 2027, Digital Clean Up Day
This day is dedicated to cleaning up online spaces through decluttering digital environments and websites.
BF is committing to cleaning up and decluttering the BF website by this day.
A digital clean up involves looking after online spaces. Members can use this day to commit to decluttering club and competition websites, social media accounts and other online presences.
The overall aim is to reduce emissions from technology, making devices last longer to stop them being thrown away and making online servers cheaper to run.
23rd March 2027, World Climate Day
This day focuses on climate action and inspiring communities to address climate change.
Members and clubs can get involved with World Climate Day by creating initiatives to reduce their club’s climate emissions. Some ideas: Taking public transport or carpooling to training and competitions; switching to cleaner energy sources at training sessions to reduce emissions and limiting the amount of waste the club produces.
More info on World Climate Day here.
22nd April, 2027, Earth Day
This year’s theme is ‘Food for Our Planet’ creating sustainable futures by creating healthier food.

As Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability are important global issues, clubs and members are encouraged to get involved with any of the schemes and share their involvement on social media. BF appreciates that clubs and members may not have the resources to get involved with every scheme but even small actions will make a big difference.
BF will be reminding clubs before each key date on how they can get involved and will also be sharing how we will be contributing to each day.
